The recent catastrophic events in Afghanistan have been heart-breaking. Terrified Afghans are seeking to flee the country to escape the barbarism of the Taliban.

GOD’s Word has a lot to say about the situation of these Afghan refugees:

Leviticus 19:33-34

When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.

Deuteronomy 10:19

Love the sojourner, therefore, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.

Proverbs 31:8-9

Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.

Hebrews 13:1-2

Let brotherly love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

As Christians, we ask ourselves the question, “What can we do?” At the present moment, I can think of two things.

First, pray. Here is a list of things to pray about:

· Pray for Americans who are seeking to get out of the country;

· Pray for our troops who are on the ground as they assist in getting people out of the country.

· Pray for other troops who are being deployed.

· Pray for the spouses and children of these deployed military.

· Pray for those interpreters and others who assisted the US military. Their lives are in danger.

· Pray for the Christians who live in the country. Their very lives are at risk.

· Pray for GOD to intervene in this ongoing crisis.

Second, give. This coming Sunday we are going to receive a special offering to help Afghan refugees. Some refugees are Christians seeking to escape persecution/death at the hands of the Taliban. Yet, there are also ethnic minorities and women and girls who are fleeing as well.

Our denomination has an organization that helps in crises like this one: SEND RELIEF. According to a recent email, “Send Relief is strategically working with World Relief and our trusted global ministry partners to minister to Afghan refugees around the world.” Our offering will go to SEND RELIEF to help support those who are in desperate need.

As followers of JESUS, let us pray and let us give! GOD has given us a remarkable opportunity to be light to a increasingly dark world by our response to this humanitarian crisis.
